10 rules for choosing organic or not organic produce

Organic produce is still expensive and not everybody can afford buying everything organic. But there are certain foods that you should never buy conventionally grown unless you don’t have enough toxins in your life. As far as I know it is not a problem for most people J

What I’ve heard from most people is that if you can peel at, it’s ok to buy it inorganic. Unfortunately, it is not necessarily true. Some vegetables and fruit take in more pesticides than others.

Not too long ago I read a book titled “Organic or not organic” that described what to best choose organic and what not and research behind it. I decided to share some tips that I use from that book when choosing organic or not organic food:

  1. Print out the “dirty dozen” list and put it in whatever you always take with when going to supermarket. Eventually you’ll know it by heart. Please go to Resources section of my site to get a list of most toxic produce. Also see “clean fifteen” – vegetables that are clean even in inorganic version.
  2. Vegetables that grow in the ground (root vegetables) are often very contaminated because they take everything from the toxic earth that they were planted in. You can actually clear out the field from the waste in the ground by planting it with carrots, they’ll take in all the toxic substances from the ground.
  3. Very watery vegetables and fruit (e.g. watermelon) are also more toxic because they would take in a lot of that water that they are being watered with.
  4. Generally fruit and vegetables with very thick skin are going to have fewer pesticides in them (e.g. pineapple, avocado).
  5. Strong tasting foods usually have less pesticides on them (like garlic) because far fewer pests like them, therefore the farmer doesn’t need to use that many toxins to pour over them.
  6. If you are going for the meat and dairy and cannot afford organic grass-fed (just organic won’t cut it since they will still be fed an unhealthy diet of unnatural foods that animals should never eat, although organic), choose less common ones like goat and sheep since they are far less grown for meat and dairy and will generally have lower pesticide amounts in them. If you have children I strongly recommend organic grass fed only. My friend once joked that children nowadays get most of their daily antibiotics from Big Macs. Remember, 70% of antibiotics in this country are fed to animals. And we are not even mentioning other drugs and hormones.
  7. Chicken is the most toxic of all kinds of poultry. The chickens in most states are still being fed arsenic (knows carcinogen) among other toxic substances. And although the amounts in one chicken might not be high, it all adds up to be a problem and add to the toxic overload. If you have a choice, it’s better to again go for a less produced poultry like turkey or duck.
  8. Always choose wild over organic fish. Organic fish is still bred in questionable conditions and, although fed organic feed, they have no space to move and in no way will have similar nutrient content and be digested in the same way as the wild one. But if you were to choose between conventional salmon and organic, organic would still be a better choice. But wild is always better.
  9. Be aware of mercury in the fish. This comes from polluting the oceans, not from fish being farmed. General rule of thumb the bigger the fish, the more mercury it will contain, so tuna is not a healthy choice.
  10. Always buy organic rice if it from the US. If grown abroad, conventional is acceptable.

    Your suggestion to buy meats that are less popular is a really really good strategy. I’ll definitely remember this next time I’m at the grocery store!
